Welcome back and an introduction to our reading events this term.
Dyslexia Awareness - All Tutors
Wednesday 17th February 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
This session aims to give participants an awareness of the range and nature of dyslexia and includes strategies to help learners. Part of the session will give information about PDA: Dyslexia.
Visual and Visual Perceptual Difficulties in Adult Literacy - All Tutors
Saturday 6th March 10.00 am – 1.00 pm
Led by Learning Connections, the session is designed to: help literacy workers identify where visual or visual processing difficulties may be present. Offer suggestions on appropriate action. Help ensure that those returning to literacy are not again faced with the same conditions which made learning more difficult for them previously. Please note: This session will be followed by a buffet lunch.
Creche Risk Assessment - ABE Tutors and Creche Workers
Monday 25th January 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
Content will include update of current procedures and the introduction of new forms.

Session content includes number language, everyday numeracy practices and different methods used by learners.
Stage 1 Tutoring: Reading - All Tutors - ALC
Saturday 1st May 9.30 am - 3.00 pm
This session focuses on "What makes a competent reader?" and includes approaches and strategies for working with adult learners.
Stage 1 Tutoring: Spelling - All Tutors - Strathbrock
Tuesday 4th May 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
After exploring memory and the learning process, this session then relates that understanding to approaches and strategies for teaching and learning spelling.
Stage 1 Tutoring: Writing - All Tutors - Strathbrock
Tuesday 11th May 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
Session content includes the writing process, the different components of writing skills and the application of a critical approach to writing.
Stage 1 Tutoring: Negotiating a Learning Programme - All Tutors - ALC
Saturday 22nd May 9.30 am - 3.00 pm
This session explores the individual learning plan and includes the cycle of planning and the processes involved in forward planning and responding to need.
Visual Stress Syndrome - All Tutors - ALC
Thursday 27th May 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
Building on the session led by Learning Connections on 'Visual and Visual Perceptual Difficulties', this session is designed to focus on Visual Stress Syndrome, ViSS. Content includes an awareness of 1) difficulties students may have2) the screening process3) strategies to help learners where ViSS may be present
