Training

Adult Basic Education offers free training to support professional and personal development.

Training for Literacies Practitioners

Within our Service, all tutors are trained and supported to move through a clearly defined and developed Tutor Pathway. This progression route equips them at each stage with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to support individuals who are aiming to become independent, self directed learners.

Tutor Pathway

The Tutor Pathway consists of:

Training is ongoing (see Training Calendar) and ensures continuous professional development. Tutors must attend a minimum of three sessions per year. There are opportunities to access external training offered by a number of partner organisations.

Training for Other Organisations

West Lothian Adult Basic Education offers free training to other organisations:

We can also respond by developing training to meet the needs of your organisation.

Raising Awareness Session

Aim:
To ensure staff have the relevant information and awareness including:

  1. developments and research currently influencing practice in adult literacy and numeracy.
  2. the philosophy of lifelong learning and adult returners
  3. information about West Lothian Adult Basic Education learners service
  4. how to refer to West Lothian Adult Basic Education
  5. awareness of readability issues in regard to their written communication with customers/clients/service users.

Audience:
This two hour session is aimed at all staff.

Spotter/Referrer Session

Aim:
To ensure participants have the relevant knowledge and understanding about spotting and referring individuals including:

  1. assumptions and perceptions of the adult literacies learner
  2. how to spot potential basic skills needs within their individual settings
  3. exploring readability issues in regard to their written communication with customers/clients/service users
  4. Adult Basic Education referral, interview and placement procedure

Audience
This two hour session is aimed at all staff.

Supporter Short Course

Aim:
To enable participants to support potential literacy and numeracy learners within their individual settings.
Content of the sessions include:

  1. considering how adults learn and what is involved in effective learning
  2. the social practices approach
  3. exploring a range of strategies to support adults who have poor literacy and numeracy skills
  4. considering approaches which participants could use within their workplace/setting
  5. identifying options to increase confidence in offering support.

Audience
This short course is aimed at staff who work with adults in their own workplace/setting and are interested in learning more about adult literacy and numeracy.
