Behind the scenes with the minutes secretary

Hi Folks, My name is Shaun Mitchell and I am a member of the F.A.B.E. Committee. I became interested in F.A.B.E. through my wife who was a student at A.B.E. and I was really impressed how she benefited from the time she spent there. Both my wife and I joined the F.A.B.E. Committee and in time I was elected as Minutes Secretary. As Minutes Secretary I record details of the subjects that are brought up on the meeting agenda. I needed some support at the beginning as I hadn’t taken minutes before, but I’m much better now. The meetings are very relaxed and other members are helpful, so we get there. A.B.E. is a fantastic organisation. I think the highlight of F.A.B.E.’s year is the Tom Meek Award Ceremony which will be on the 29th June this year. Shaun

Tom Meek Award
Tom Meek was a volunteer with ABE. He had huge respect for the effort that students put in to their learning and the changes they made to their own and other people’s lives. When Tom died his family made a donation to create the awards event which now takes place in June each year. FABE organise the event and invite tutors to nominate students who they think are worthy of an award. Tutors complete a nomination form and a group, made up of FABE committee members, judge each nomination on four criteria. All nominated students receive an award on the night and the winner receives the Tom Meek trophy. As the years have gone on, the event has become bigger and better and now includes presentations for other student achievements such as the Six Book Challenge and Youth Achievement Award.

It's that time of year again when we will be asking tutors to think about nominations for the Tom Meek Award. This year the event will be held on the 29th June at Howden Park Centre, Livingston at 7 p.m..We will be awarding '6 Book Challenge' certificates and your name could be put forward to the Reading Agency Prize Draw . You have the chance to win a visit to London . This year will also include the Inked Book Launch for The Scottish Book Trust Finally, we will be presenting the trophy to 'The Student of the Year'. A lot of hard work from students, tutors and volunteers goes into this event. If you would like to attend – it's free! Give your name to your tutor. Anyone who normally receives bus vouchers will be able to get them to attend this event. This is a really brilliant evening which everyone can enjoy. Each month we will have a countdown to the ceremony. In April tutors will be putting together the nominations and some of the materials will be getting ready to be printed. If you are doing an interesting piece of group work, have a word with your tutor and you could see your work displayed on the evening of the 29th.Keep looking at the website to see what is happening next month.
