Spotlight on ... George

10th May 2010

Our spotlight for May is on George who goes to the Craigsfarm group on a Wednesday evening. He tells us a bit about what he has been learning and how it helps him in his everyday life.

"I come from Blackburn.  I work in the cleansing department; I'm the Weighbrig Operator on my shift. I found out about ABE through one of the boys at work.  He was telling me all about the class so I asked the Union Rep. if he could try to get me into one of the classes.

I wanted to come along to help me with my reading as I could not read hardly at all. I can read, I reckon, about 40% better since I started this class. Plus I feel more confident in myself when I go out and I'm talking to folk. I can now pick up a paper and have a look at it and start reading it.  Sometimes when you're watching the crime programmes on Sky, information comes on the screen halfway through the programme.  It comes up with reading and you've got to read it to show you can follow the story.  I can now do this a bit better.

I enjoy coming to my ABE group as everyone here is wanting to learn something.  I would encourage anyone at all to come along.  I'm 54 years old and I've taken the step so anyone can do it!"
