Spotlight On...Craig

11th February 2010

This month Craig, from the Monday night Bathgate group, tells us about his experiences of learning.

"I came to ABE for the second time because of my kids.  My oldest daughter?s who?s seven and goes to the local school.  I felt I wasn?t wanting her to come to me for help on her spelling and words and me saying I can?t help because I can?t spell.  I wanted to get in early and make my spelling better but it?s also helped me with my daughter; we?re starting together with sounds.  It?s basically helping me and helping her at the same time.  I?ve achieved quite a lot, I?ve been looking at words in a different way and feeling more confident.  I?ve found a strategy that works for me in breaking words down and finding a word within a word.  Before, I would tend to write sentences using no difficult words but now I can do it in a way where I don?t have to do that.  I?ve got the confidence to attempt to spell difficult words.

Now I can read bedtime stories with my kids and help them with my oldest daughter with her homework.  I think I did the right thing at the right time coming when my kids were young. I can see a difference in myself.

This time last year ABE and West Lothian College did a pilot scheme and I was fortunate to get some SQA qualifications in numeracy and IT.  Next I?m hoping to do an open learning course up at the college in Communication and who knows after that!"
